Paul S Johnson Jr.
Paul S. Johnson Jr. 1958
Paul Johnson is a remarkable man who has led an extraordinary life. He is amongst one of the most experienced pilots in North America and if you added up the hours he has actually spent flying aircraft all over the world, it amounts to an incredible four and a half years, 24 hours a day!
He has spent all of his adult life in aviation either as a crack naval carrier pilot or working in the aviation industry. He has flown everything from commercial jet liners, to super-sonic jet fighters in many theaters of war. He has been involved in covert ‘black’ operations during the cold war. As a flight combat instructor he taught such luminaries to fly as Astronaut Allen Bean and Senator John McCain.
Here are just a few of his many achievements:
In his military career he has flown 6000+ command hours and 247 combat missions. Commanded a Fighter Attack Squadron; was selected as an Air Force Exchange Pilot flying the F-100 Super Sabre; deployed as a Flight Commander of a Composite Air Strike Force (CASF); leader of the “Blue Birds” Flight Demonstration Team. He had Flight experience in 13 types of super-sonic aircraft and has been the recipient of numerous awards for participation in eight crises, including Hard Surface, RED OAK, Cuba, Turkey, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and the Bering Straights into Russia.
In addition to that he received USAF “Top Gun” Awards in 2 consecutive quarters in 1963 & 1964. He briefed President John F. Kennedy on October 26, 1962 regarding the planned attack on Cuba. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal on August 16, 1964 at Myrtle Beach AFB, South Carolina, by Secretary of the Air Force General Curtis Le May. And he was a friend of many Hollywood luminaries including the likes of Bob Hope & Dean Martin…
This thrilling biography perfectly and warmly captures another simpler time that has now sadly long gone. With its humorous and yet sometimes quite profound reminiscences ‘Call Sign: Killer’ makes for a captivating book that will fondly stay with the reader long after the last page has been turned.
